New Project: How can we make musical instruments using junk and the science of waves? This week we start a 3 week project learning about the connections between music and sound waves. We're working to design and build working instruments using recycled material and the science behind what makes them sound the way they do.Our audience is Mr. Alhambra, the after-school coordinator who is looking for cool projects he can use with students that are both fun and educational. We have guest speakers from SJSU music department as well. Here is the project one-pager. Google classroom has a links to some interesting videos. Important DATES: FRIDAY 4-15 *FIRST PROTOTYPE of a working instrument is DUE **Mr. Alhambra coming in to talk about what he needs for this project and answer questions. MONDAY 4-18 *SJSU Music professors coming in to see our work and talk about the science of sound waves in music

We have started working on a unit about waves. Our essential question is:What are waves and how are they different? We will focus on the differences between mechanical and electromagnetic waves and the differences between transverse and longitudinal waves. We will also learn to identify the wavelength and amplitude of waves. Here are a few videos to get started and a short article we'll be using to study waves. Waves reading from class. We are starting a new unit in Amplify to learn about force and motion. There has been a problem with a space probe trying to dock with a space station and students will need to use what they learn to figure out what went wrong. Be on the lookout for homework about once a week. We will be using Amplify Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, students who have their work completed will have a fun design challenge to work on while other students work to complete missing assignments from the week. This unit will last about five weeks. Engineering students: You have been working hard as teams to engineer aircraft that deliver medical supplies to a remote location using a launcher. You have been prototyping by identifying your designs' failure points and redesigning to develop an optimal design. Tomorrow is the day you show off your team's work and answer questions from your classmates. Here are some of the questions you will be asked.
Argument: Earth and Human Activity
Do human population and consumption affect earth’s environments? Write an argument supported by evidence to answer this question. Criteria:
All work should be done in class. You can turn in assignments up to 1 school-day late. Due Dates: Topic Choice: Thursday 11/19 (Climate change OR Habitat Loss) Outline: Friday 11/20 Written Argument: Tuesday 12/1 This week we explore the changes in human population and the effects that might have on the planet. Check out the video World Population and How Did We Get So Big So Fast? Then read the article, Human Population. We will have several discussions and find answers to questions from students. Looking for a way to boost your grade before the end of the trimester? Rewrite the conclusion to your experiment on SPEED and ENERGY. Get it done by Tuesday, November 10th . Trimester ends the 13th.
